Statement
by Speaker Christine C. Quinn

Re:
Post Offices to Remain Open

Today, New Yorkers can
breathe a sigh of relief after hearing that, of the proposed local post offices
that have been facing closures, more than half have been spared from the
chopping block, including the West Village Post Office at 527 Hudson Street,
and the Port Authority Post Office at 76
Ninth Avenue in my district. While some may rely
on other methods to deliver their correspondence, there are many who still rely
on a number of key services that post offices offer.

I want to thank my Council colleagues for passing a resolution in October that
called on United States Postal Service (USPS) to protect post offices from
closing.  I must also recognize Congressman Jerrold Nadler who has worked
diligently to save these and other post office locations around the country
from being shuttered. Most of all, I want to thank the residents, especially
those in my district, who would have been affected by these
closures.  They rallied around their neighborhoods, collected signatures
and voiced their concerns at our City Council hearing.  Our residents
depend on the vital services that the United States Postal Service offers. For
the five remaining post offices that are still facing possible closures, I urge
the US Postal Service to help those communities find an alternate way to
provide their residents with mail services.
