Mental Health, Education & Justice for ALL

JUVENILE JUSTICE
Any parent knows what medical science has now shown: The adolescent brain operates differently than that of an adult. The poor choices an adolescent may make does not predict the character of the adult he or she will grow to be.
Currently NY law allows 16 and 17 year old to be charged and tried as adults. This means, among other things: They can be questioned by police without parents being present or even being notified their child is in custody. The 16 or 17 year old will be asked to waive very important rights (“Miranda Rights”) with no parental input, yet they cannot legally sign a contract at this age without a parent co-signing. If bail cannot be made or obtained, the parents have no opportunity to converse at length in a confidential setting with their 16 or 17 year old. The 16 or 17 year old makes the decision to accept a plea bargain or go to trial. If accepting a plea, they are again asked to waive very important rights, rights our justice system is founded on, when our society’s laws do not allow them to enter into any contract outside of the justice system because it recognizes what parents and medical science knows: They do not have the requisite experience, knowledge, maturity or decision making skills to do so.

Put Quality of Life First

I am a former Sullivan Co resident who is now employed as a criminal investigator at an Indian-run casino on the west coast. I ask you Mr. Spitzer to not just uphold the state constitution, but to be (sad to say) a political pioneer by putting quality of life issues over dollars and cents. Sullivan Co needs businesses that bring in jobs AND give back some type of product or service. NOT a business that just draws in people who really cannot afford to be gambling, and of course the criminal element that is inevitably attracted to casinos. I can assure you that casinos are proactively far more concerned with how much people spend, rather than what type of people find casinos appealing for one reason or another. This is just one quality of life issue among many at stake. Although some of the local representatives are ignorantly willing to sell off these issues for a few million dollars, your constituents urge you to do the right thing and oppose any casinos in or around Sullivan Co. Thank you.

No to Casinos

Dear Governor-Elect Spitzer,
We do not want growth of gambling casinos in New York State, either in the Catskills nor in Buffalo.
Casinos nurture addition. Gambling addiction fosters poverty in proximate areas, increases bankruptcy, and increases crime.
All consequences are bad for out citizenry and add to taxpayers expense.

Casino in the Catskills? BAD IDEA!

It may be tempting for you and your staff to disregard my statement since I am not a resident of New York state, however, Indian casinos are a national phenomenom and as such the effects are not limited to New York state alone.
I understand perfectly the politicians desire for the easy fix. There is a Faustian spirit rampant in American politics that bases its desire for quick riches on the assertion that its ok to victimize a few for the benefit of the many.
It's pathetic and morally bankrupt for local, county, and state officials to promote a casino despite gamblings proven propensity to inflict addiction, business failures, crimes and escalating costs for police and social services upon the community and call it justice and the people's choice.

Ideas to protect New Yorkers.

1. Stop the proliferation of native American casinos in Buffalo and i our states cities and territory. Keep the casinos on the native reservations. Please meet with former Congressman John La Falce about this issue.
2. Stop the crime guns importation into New York State from the states that border New York State.
3. Meet with the governor of Pennsylvania about closing down all Phantom Fireworks stores set up specifically to sell illegal fireworks to New York State residents. These stores on the New York and Pennsylvania border cannot sell fireworks to residents of Pennsylvania. On the Fourth of July in 1997 Buffalo Firefighter Michael Seguin died in a housefire caused by the careless use of fireworks from Pennsylvania. The television stations in Buffalo every year, now do advertise Phantom Fireworks on Buffalo television before the Fourth of July. This activity killed a Buffalo firefighter. It must be stopped to protect the people of New York State from law breaking that is killing people and causing fires and loss of property in New York State.

Reducing the Real Cost of Medical Care

Allow nurses and pharmacists to diagnose and treat a variety of medical condictions that are relatively easy to diagnose through easy to administer tests that yield clear results.

Positive Thinking

- Listen to local people and their issues - community leaders don't always reflect the true problems of a location (special interests take hold and strangle voices of reason).
- Central New York vs down state has and will continue to be a 'thorn' which keeps oozing unless you can change the thinking of 'so-called' legislative leaders. These people only have political interests of big spenders and the little guy gets left behind.
- Indian Land Claim (it's not my problem) this is all we hear in our area from outside people who have no clue as to what the consequencies will be if this is not settled and without giving the farm away.
