"EVEN a prairie fire it survives; at a zephyr's breath it revives" -- such is the resilience of life in grass that I came to appreciate when reading poetry in my youth.
Now, I enjoy a scene of little children in the twilight chasing and romping around on a neat and smooth lawn like a super-size carpet. Soft, supple and genial, it supports the kids' lively movements and cushions their falls. Our happy children do belong to an era of tender grass.

When I woke up that morning all I wanted to do was walk. It was winter my favorite season. This walk would change my life forever and I would remember for years to come. On that one special walk is where I meet the love of my life and lose my love. I remember it like it was yesterday.

“OK, you can do this,” I said, trying to sound cheerful.

My mom sat straddling（跨） her brand-new bike, her new helmet falling forward over her eyes. She gripped the handlebars（把手） the way I had seen her grip the steering wheel in heavy traffic, and she looked kind of pale.

“I don’t know, Jake. There are too many people around. I don’t think I want to. . . .”

After 20 years as a full-time wife and mother, I decided now that my kids were grown, I needed a part-time job to keep me busy. I decided to drive a school bus.

Charlie began riding my bus in September of my fourth year driving. Eight years old, with blond hair andcrystalline（透明的，水晶般的） gray eyes, he got on with a group of children. I wasn't prepared for a reply, but with resignationoakley sunglasses, he said, "I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat!" But I kept on walking.

A hike was the perfect order of the day. The boys were excited about the idea. It would be a goodworkout（锻炼，练习） and it would be good to be together.

We planned to leave immediately after lunch. I noticed Daniel, who will be ten in November, and Wes, who will be seven in December, scramble for（争夺） their gear. They had spent the morning pouring over outdoor outfitter catalogs looking at sophisticated equipment that would be sufficient to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.
