Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom eyes China 3G market: report
Taiwan's leading telephone operator Chunghwa Telecom is looking to China's thirdgeneration mobile phone market despite strict government restrictions on such investments, a report said Tuesday. The Financial Times quoted Chunghwa Telecom chairman Hochen Tan as saying that the company plans to team up with China Telecom and China Netcom once they obtain 3G licences. "Although the Taiwan market is much smaller than China's, there are similarities in our habits, our language, our stories," he told the newspaper.
Yet the Habib case raises those questions at every turn
Why, for instance, did the Howard government conduct an elaborate charade for years, pretending not to know if Habib was imprisoned in Egypt before turning up in Guantanamo Bay?
Beauty comes from within
A respect for traditional ingredients is changing theface of Japanese, and western, cosmetics. There was a time when we considered Paris the centre of beautyand sophistication. The women seemed slimmer, more chic and moretanned than us and we believed their beauty potions held some kindof magical secret. Now there's a new destination that seems to holdall the answers: Tokyo. Japanese women are now seen as beautiful and sophisticated, keepers of traditional beauty secrets.
It's like something from a friend
The quartz imparts the stamp of the site to the wine, says Michael. And now my children, the fourth generation to live on this property, will inherit that. It's easy to have a piece of land that's great for raising horses or breeding sheep, but it's wonderful that this land is excellent for viticulture and the wine has the personality of the place.Land can sometimes be even more valuable than name. Just ask 26yearold Bec Hardy, who belongs to the sixth generation of the South Australian Hardy wine dynasty.
Winemaking's new generation
WHEN Jock Tulloch hosted a tasting event to showcase his family's wines this year, he threw a party in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with a DJ, tapas and an upbeat vibe. I didn't want anything stuffy, says the 31yearold. No sitdown dinner, long speeches or overdosing on technical jargon. Wine should be fun.Jock's childhood friend Lisa McGuigan would thoroughly approve. She describes her Tempus Two wines, with their pewter labels and curvy bottles, as a fashion accessory. It's a girl thing, she says, just like choosing what to wear to dinner.
Amongst many others, they taught me a great deal
We met 20 years ago. I told him I did not like him. Uncharacteristically, he refrained from a profanity, offering instead his first advice, 'Never pass an opinion on someone you have not met.' He later taught me the absolute importance of believing in a cause and bleeding for it. Rhondda Vanzella made me, politically and personally—through 15 years of selfless sacrifice for Bradfield, the Liberal Party and my family. Doug Thompson dispensed encouragement, support and always a Slim Dusty story.
The second issue is the hair
They all sat on the opposite side of the table to me and the appointed spokesperson leaned forward and said, 'Dr Nelson, I will get straight to the point: you have an earring.' I said, 'Yes.' She said, 'We believe you are a homosexual.' It is not that funny!
Energy and financial shares were the top gainers
US stocks rose on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve pointed to signs of strength in the economy, comments that gave some relief to investors worried about possible debt defaults in Europe. The Fed's comments on the economy and its statement that it would keep interest rates low for an extended period lifted bank shares. JPMorgan ChaseCo rose 2.5 per cent and BKW Bank index rose 1.4 per cent. Investors also scooped up shares beatendown in Tuesday's selloff after debt downgrades for Greece and Portugal.
The onus remains on Australia as a party
It is highly unlikely that changes occurring in a three to sixmonth time frame would meet this high threshold. Third, reliance on the possibility of future United Nations High Commisioner for Refugees guidelines is also a misguided justification for this policy. Even if new guidelines are issued in the future with respect to these countries, they are not determinative. The onus remains on Australia as a party to the Refugee Convention to undertake its own assessment of each asylum seeker's claim in order to ensure that it does not return anyone to a situation of persecution.
Obama returns to childhood home Indonesia
AP US President Barack Obama has met Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the state palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, at the start of a whirlwind 24-hour visit. The two leaders shook hands with assembled US and Indonesian officials before heading into bilateral talks expected to focus on security and economic issues, on the second leg of Obama's nine-day Asian tour. Obama arrived in Jakarta under stormy skies on Air Force One from India, as his nine-day Asian odyssey took him from the world's largest democracy to its most populous Muslim-majority nation.
The huge challenge was erasing the idea of pressure
Cornish, now working on an all-girl action film in Canada withSFX wunderkind Zack Snyder, is cautiously excited about the film'scritical success. "When you make a film, it's not what you thinkabout - you are just head down, creating a story together," shesays. "I'm just so happy for the film. Dig deep in the Top End
True country ... (from top, left to right) dinner is speared at Bawaka; Gove Peninsula coastline; Robinson River at Seven Emu Station; the author tackles a yidaki. Photo: Max Anderson, Jacky Ghossein From hunting to bush cooking, fishing to didgeridoo playing, Max Anderson experiences three remarkable indigenous tours. Aboriginal tourism experiences in Australia are described in many ways but the words "dynamic" and "exciting" are rarely used. Be honest, how many times have you listened politely to abstract and slightly dull Dreamtime stories while circling a landmark?
That's just the reality of party politics
Jessica emailed it to her mother, chapter by chapter - with Thrse giving her instant feedback. "At one point, she was in Trinidad with Dad, and she fed-back on the chapter in about five minutes on her BlackBerry from the back of a convoy somewhere. She was so encouraging throughout the process." What about the chapter in which PM Patton is overthrown by Brennan?
Horrible hysterical comedy
