CRIME, PERCEPTIONS OF CRIME, AND THE MEDIA: PART 2

On Thursday May 27, 2010, the Daily News featured its second article of 2010 about crime in East New York. You can read the 5/27/10 article by clicking here and the 1/12/10 article by clicking here

The fact that two have appeared in the Daily News in under six months calls for closer scrutiny. Let me start with the crime stats themselves. CompStat reports are available to the public, and they take only a few seconds to download and another few seconds to read.

Staten Island Democratic Association

Mark Green, candidate for Public Advocate & Tony Avella, candidate for Mayor will be the two guest speakers at the Staten Island Democratic Association's March 19th meeting, 8 p.m. at the Road House Restaurant.

This is a good opportunity to hear from, before the September Democratic primary, two of the candidates running for office .

Last month mayoral candidate Bill Thompson and City Comptroller candidate David Yassky addressed the Club.

In the next few months we will have as our guest speakers Norman Siegel, Eric Gioia & Bill de Blasio candidates for Public Advocate and Melinda Katz, John Liu & David Weprin, candidates for City Comptroller.

Vito Fossella is 3 for 3

On May 2, 2007, Congressman Vito Fossella, who represents Staten Island and southwest Brooklyn voted against the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Health and Iraq Acoutability Act of 2007 for the third time. This vote was to override President Bush's veto. His previous two votes against this bill came on March 23rd and April 25th. He is the only member of New York City's congressional delegation to vote against this legislation.

About 60% of the American people support setting dates for the withdrawal of troops. I believe the percentage of those in his congressional district who support setting dates for withdrawal may be as much as 10% higher.

Where's the Love on Staten Island?

In case anyone was still under the impression that the Mayor would even think about supporting Staten Island Council Member James Oddo to replace State Sen. Marchi ... here's an exchange from today's Staten Island Advance.

"Replacing John Marchi with Jimmy Oddo is like Babe Dahlgren taking over for Lou Gehrig," a high-ranking City Hall source told the Advance.

Jimmy, How Do You Really Feel About Your Colleagues?

In case you missed it...

Of a recently introduced City Council resolution (by Council Member David Yassky) supporting the censure of President Bush, here's what Staten Island Republican Council Member James Oddo had to say:

"I think it's such a stupid resolution I'm encouraging a vote on it, so New Yorkers can get a look at the mental health of the members of the council.  Lets see where people stand on this dopey idea. ... This is partisan politics. And I like David, but this is so partisan, so pointless, this is the type of resolution that embarrasses the council."
