Where is your Member of Congress?

Do you know where your Representative is? If you live in NY-20 you do because Rep. Kristen Gillibrand posts her schedule everyday. Two weeks ago NYT printed an article saying that NY-20’s Republican candidates used Rep. Gillibrand’s publicly available schedule to determine she had been fundraising overseas at a legal event. It brought the benefits of the schedule into question.

Since posting a schedule is a novel idea the benefits can’t be seen clearly unless you have a little help. The fact is that a daily schedule can show constituents that their Representative does, in fact, spend a great deal of time in the district with voters. Sunlight has begun mapping the meetings of our schedule posters. For more information check out our blog here.

New York State: Leader on Congressional Calendars?

Today the Daily Freeman posted this article on Rep. Kristen Gillibrand posting her daily schedule online. In the article Rep. Hinchey (NY-22) and Rep. Hall (NY-19) responded to questions about making their schedules available.

"Rep. Maurice Hinchey said he's spoken with his staff about posting his daily schedule on the Internet, but has been told it would take "an awful lot of time."

"I've been doing this for a long time and everything that I have done always has been completely open," said Hinchey, D-Hurley.

The veteran congressman said Gillibrand's effort likely comes from the ethical concerns raised by her constituents.

Rangel's Excuse

"Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?"

People elsewhere heard this as New York condescension. I hear something else. What this sounds like is a pre-excuse for New York continuing to get screwed by the federal government fiscally under Democratic rule.

What was the context of this statement? Was it a discussion of why New York is so fiscally disadvantaged despite having an above average poverty rate and a below average median household income? Did someone ask Rangel if this would change?

In any event, Mississippi was a bad example -- it is truly poorer than New York, and New Yorkers don't mind contributing to those truly poorer. But that is not all that goes on. Republicans screw us because we vote for Democrats. And Democrats screw us because we are not up for grabs. Seems that nothing will change.
