abortionILLUMINATING SHADY STEWART-COUSINS REPORTSOn May 20, 2008, the news media began issuing reports about 3 “targeted attacks” at the office of State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, located in Yonkers, NY. While it seemed that the facts changed on an hourly basis, there were reports that the Senator’s office had been ransacked and that bullets were fired into the office during daytime hours, evoking the image of staffers ducking under their desks for cover. Inferences were made that there may be a connection between these alleged attacks and ‘anti-abortion’ demonstrators who held rallies outside Stewart-Cousins’ office in protest of the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act (RHAPP). Local News 12 ran footage from a recent rally at the end of their report exhibiting a truly grandiose lapse in editorial judgment. Rally sponsors, who have an established history of peaceful pro-life activity, were not contacted for comment before reports aired and appeared in print.
The Deadly Deception of the RHAPP ActMost New Yorkers are completely unaware of the looming legislative threat posed by the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act (RHAPP). The name itself is a misnomer – and a clear attempt to mislead the public. The bill was the pet-project of former Governor Eliot Spitzer and before ending his career in disgrace, his utter disregard for the value of women was written into this bill. If RHAPP is passed into law, New Yorkers will pay a tremendous cost.
An Act of New York State
Senate Bill 6045, introduced by NYS Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins (D-Westchester) and better known as the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act, is one of the most dangerous and radical pieces of proposed legislation in New York State that I have ever seen. It contains extraordinarily broad language that will promote abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy and open the door to extreme measures for women and health care providers. I urge all New Yorkers to become better informed about it, to contact their State legislators, and to work diligently to oppose this bill to ensure its defeat.
Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz - 40 Days for Life
On Thursday, September 27, 2007 from 9:30am – 11:00am New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) will join the members of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization and Mr. Chris Slattery, organizer of Expectant Mother Care in a demonstration against abortion. The demonstration, part of 40 Days for Life, will take place in front of Dr. Emily’s Clinic – A Bronx Women’s Medical Pavilion located at 560 Southern Boulevard, on the corner of East 149th Street in The Bronx.
Safe Legal and Rare
The dichotomy in politics between what people say they favor and the contents of their actual agenda is often striking. Take the so-called “Right to Life” movement. As an article by Russell Shorto in today’s NY Times Magazine makes clear; the real agenda of many “Right to Lifers” isn’t preventing abortions, but preventing sex. That is not to say this is the agenda of all “Right to Lifers”. I have a gay Catholic friend, who when confronted with the dichotomy between his opposition to abortion and his sexual libertarianism, always smiles and says “blow jobs don’t kill babies”. And certainly there are outspoken "Right to Lifers" like Nat Hentoff who strongly advocate access to contraception and comprehensive sex education as part of an effort to prevent abortions.
Mike Not Putting Money Where His Mouth IsAre we all so used to the fact that Mike’s rhetoric has nothing to do with actions that it is no longer worthy of comment? On Thursday, Mike spoke to a pro-choice group and the press reported: “On this issue, you're either with us or you're not. Period. You can't have it both ways," said Bloomberg, a Republican, in a passionate noon address before the liberal NARAL Pro-Choice New York. "We can't let anybody equivocate." Bloomberg said pro-choice supporters must stand tall against elected officials who "try to nuance themselves" away from a commitment to abortion rights "in the interest of political expediency and partisan politics."
