CONGRESSMAN GREG MEEKS STEPS UP TO HELP SUB-PRIME MORTGAGE VICTIMS, DISTRESSED HOME OWNERS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFozxbsL_5M

Congressman Gregory Meeks visited the three large congregations at the Tri Murti Bhavan Mandir, the Sikh Cultural Society and the Baba Makhan Shah Lobana Sikh Temple in the western part of his Congressional district, and discussed a number of issues, problems, solutions and initiatives impacting his constituents. He was accompanied by Community Advocate and leader Albert Baldeo, who arranged the meetings for him to hear their problems. They were resoundingly received, and lifted spirits with the roll out of a number of initiatives.
The leaders of the Sikh Cultural Society in Richmond Hill, especially Baldev Singh Boparai (Gen. Sect'y), Mohan Singh Sandhu (President of the Sikh Missionary Cause in the USA), Bhupinder Singh Bhoparai (Vice President), State Committeeman Dhan Singh and Jagbir Singh Bain (Community Board member), partnered with attorney Albert Baldeo, and presented Congressman Meeks with the highest award for his dedication to fighting for their issues, and protecting the poor.  Jarnail Singh, Baldev Singh, Kulber Singh and other leaders of the Baba Makhan Shah Lobana Sikh Temple also presented the Congressman with the prestigious Saropao Award. The large South Asian/Caribbean/Hispanic community also honored the Congressman.
Foremost among these issues is the high rate of foreclosures, which have been strangling constituents recently. "Many hardworking tax payers are being unfairly robbed of the American Dream, and of their jobs and their homes, " Baldeo complained on behalf of those present. The Congressman informed grateful constituents of his foreclosure intervention plan, which he has implemented in his office located at 153-01 Jamaica Avenue in Queens, which assists homeowners by offering them free legal counseling, advice and mortgage modification with the banks they have defaulted against every Wednesday starting at noon. He pointed out that his help is available to anyone, whether or not they live in his Congressional district, and that anyone can call his office at (718) 725-6000, stating that "I have instituted this initiative to combat predatory lending and consumer and mortgage fraud." A large number of constituents are scheduled to get help from the Congressman's office in the coming weeks.
Hate crimes, racial discrimination and profiling were also brought to the attention of the Congressman by some attendees, who complained that they are sometimes targeted by the police, and by city and state agencies. The Sikh community recounted many instances when they were attacked and beaten up by others who ignorantly and incorrectly perceive them as terrorists, whereas they are patriotic Americans. He advised that he will continue to stand with and represent everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity or creed, who has suffered from these forms of social injustice and indignities. Baldeo suggested that the City institutionalize public interfaith meetings, and educate each other about our diverse heritages, religions and customs, because it is through mutual respect, unity and understanding that universal peace can be achieved.
Other issues discussed included better education for our kids, health care, jobs, wages and public safety. "A lot is riding on the stimulus package the Obama administration has implemented, but we have to brace ourselves for bad times ahead," the Congressman revealed, as he promised to bring much needed help to his community through the clout he wields by sitting on the influential House International Relations Committee, and the powerful House Financial Services Committee. He also offered solutions related to civil, labor, housing and immigrants' rights.
"I will fight for you, and bring more resources to your community, and work with the tremendous leadership exemplified by Albert Baldeo" he said.

Congress Members Adrift...

The Center for Public Integrity just completed a study examining 23,000+ privately funded trips taken by members of Congress and staffers over a 5.5-year period.

Lots 'O Fact Finding.  And among their many interesting discoveries, we learn that the office of Queens Rep. Gregory Meeks finds itself smack dab atop the list of Congressional travelers; meaning, it consumed more than $350,000 worth of travel during this time period.

What Happens In Cuba, Stays In...Separately, we also learn that as a result of the Center's efforts, NY Congressional Dean, Charles Rangel, has acknowledged a violation of House ethics rules, and reimbursed two of the sponsors of a trip he took to Cuba fours years ago with his wife and son.

The Ada Smith Saga

It is surprising to me that this story has not really taken on more life.  State Senator Ada Smith was censured by the Senate and has lost those coveted "perks" that she had as a person in the Senate leadership.

The interesting part involves the Queens County Organization and its minions.  For so long, they have supported Smith and her antics, and have turned a deaf ear to those who were crying for change.  It begs the question - where is Denny Farrell, Thomas Manton, Gregory Meeks, Floyd Flake, the labor community and others?

Could it be that those involved enjoy having her around, or simply, they could care less about the community and progressive, sane leadership?
