CQ Politics | Biden's New Role as Backup Player

With Members’ Minds Made Up, Even Leaders’ Cajoling
Couldn’t Win Bailout

st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) }

As the nation’s next vice president, Joseph R. Biden Jr. will have a boss
for the first time since he was a young public defender fresh out of law
school. Colleagues and others who have worked with him over his three-dozen
years in Congress wonder how well the gregarious, opinionated senator from Delaware will be able to
play second fiddle to the younger, more introverted new president.

Statement from New Yorkers For Real Recycling Reform On Governors Paterson's Bottle Tax
New Yorkers Should Reject This Cynical Food Tax

ALBANY, NY (11/12/2008; 1601)(readMedia)-- Governor Paterson's proposal to expand the bottle tax to include virtually every product in the beverage aisle while keeping the unclaimed deposits is nothing more than a food tax that will come at the worst possible time for New Yorkers already struggling with increased food costs and other economic hardships.

Legislature Must Reject Health-care Cuts

ALBANY, NY (11/12/2008; 1455)(readMedia)-- The proposed funding cuts to the long term care system will reduce quality of care, result in job losses and limit access to long term care services for our seniors and the disabled.
The New York Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (NYAHSA) understands that the state is facing difficult financial times, but as it responds to the financial situation, it must do so in a manner that limits the impact on vulnerable seniors and disabled individuals. We fear that the proposed cuts will have a profound direct and negative impact on these New Yorkers.

New York State Consumer Protection Board Partners with Barnes and NobleCollege Booksellers to Raise Awareness about Lower Textb

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DATE:  November 12, 2008

New York State Consumer Protection
Board Partners with Barnes and Noble College Booksellers to Raise Awareness
about Lower Textbook Cost Options for Students

The rising prices of textbooks are visible
and frustrating to millions of students and parents each semester.  As
we confront the current fiscal crisis, students are looking for cost-savings
approaches for these and other expenses associated with their higher education.
Therefore, the New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB), as part
of its ongoing Stretch Your Dollar Efforts (SYDE), is working with Barnes
& Noble College Booksellers (B&N) and the State University of New
York (SUNY) to educate students, parents and faculty about the option and
benefits of purchasing used textbooks.

NYS Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz Opposes Governor David Paterson’s
Proposed Budget Cuts

As democrats, it is our responsibility to offer protection to the most
needy, the poor, the elderly, our children and the handicapped in our
community and the entire State of New York.

It is for this reason that I am surprised that a Democratic Governor is
proposing budget cuts of 2 billion dollars to the State’s budget that will
directly hurt the most needy communities.

This proposal by Governor David Paterson, includes cuts to programs and

Al Vann, Lew Fidler and Leroy Comrie: Birds of a Feather?

It seems like Al Vann has been around Brooklyn’s politics since George Washington was president of the USA; no joke. In politics, his name has been discussed more times than the daily weather report on any television station. I have been told that over the years he has been a teacher, unionist, political activist and elected official. He was an assembly member in the Albany legislature for 27 years (1974-2001). He won election to the New York city council in 2001. Some of his detractors have suggested that he came here on pre-retirement leave.

I know that there are some good things that Al Vann has done -in terms of public service- and I believe that one of these days a street in Bed-Stuy will be named after him. After all, he has held public office for about 35 years. Fine.
