Statement from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo Concerning Bonuses to Top Executives at UBS:

"UBS has made a wise choice not to give bonuses to its top executives this year. We are moving into a new era of corporate belt-tightening and the path forward is clear. Investors and taxpayers are being hit from all sides, and Wall Street needs to do the right thing when it comes to corporate leadership and responsibility. It's time for the rest of Wall Street to look in the mirror and follow the steps taken by UBS and Goldman Sachs."

Protecting Life

Why is the New York City Council proposing a Clinic Access Bill to create a buffer zone between expectant moms and sidewalk counselors who have a history of helping thousands of women make the loving choice to have their children?

The proposed bill is meant to ensure that more women are quickly ushered into abortion clinics – and in New York City, the abortion industry’s target is no different than their target throughout the US : black and Hispanic women.

Volunteers in front of New York City’s abortion clinics, like Monsignor Reilly and God’s Precious Helpers, have made a great impact in the lives of mostly black and Hispanic women who face unplanned pregnancies. Many expectant women who approach abortion clinics feel they have no where to turn for help. Nowhere, that is, until they are greeted by sidewalk counselors who believe women deserve better and deserve support and care to raise their families.

Statement from Attorney General Andrew Cuomo Concerning Bonuses to Top Executives at Citigroup:

"Citigroup's announcement today that it will cut an additional 50,000 jobs is a sad and disturbing development for the company. As Citigroup suffers, so too do investors, employees, and taxpayers. At the very least, Citigroup should follow Goldman Sachs' lead and announce quickly that top executives will not be receiving bonuses this year. Citigroup's stated intention to wait until the new year to make its bonus decisions is a mistake. After four consecutive quarterly losses, it seems only fair that top executives should shoulder their fair share of these difficult economic times. It would send exactly the wrong message for Citigroup's top brass to collect bonuses while investors, taxpayers, and now Citigroup's own employees suffer."

Jack Johnson, Chuck Berry, Kwame Kilpatrick and Eliot Spitzer: a little piece of pussy (revisited)

On the fifth of September, 2008, I did a column about the double standard that passes for justice in this country; something which often occurs when whites and blacks face the system against identical or similar charges. I totally anticipated doing another column on this issue before the end of the year: so here it is.

In that column I spoke about the former mayor of Detroit, a black man named Kwame Maleek Kilpatrick. He pleaded guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice; in a situation emanating from issues surrounding his adulterous affair with his female chief of staff. I compared his dilemma to the one former president Bill Clinton faced during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. I suggested that at various points, and in various places/situations, there was a double standard of justice for black electeds when compared to their white counterparts.
